desperate things:

ruby rae's true crime story

It all starts in the empty motel parking lot, stars streaking the sky like luminous mascara pulled by the gravity of tears. The choice is hers: go find a bar to drown her heartbreak or stave off the loneliness with her guitar. In the dark room, she sings songs to herself whose honesty burns so bright it lights the way forward. Sometimes the best things come out of the rubble of desperate things, and at the end of it all—after all the heartbreak, all the cold nights, all the doubts—there is redemption in understanding that whatever happened along the way brought you right where you need to be. With True Crime, Ruby Rae pulls neo-surf noir, rockabilly swagger, and torch-song orchestration out of nostalgic shadows to create an album of songs you wish would linger for just one more chorus; something to keep you company when love leaves you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

ruby rae BIO

Ruby Rae is an independent songwriter & singer who collaborates with a talented combination of musicians including Olivia Mancini (Washington Social Club, Olivia & The Mates), Ed Coleman, Tyler Beckwith, Colin Dempsey (Supersmall) and Ed Donohue (Donny Hue & The Colors).

Ruby Rae writes and performs music that defies easy categorization: a catalogue of influences would include Wanda Jackson, Mazzy Star, and Lori McKenna. Both vibrant and dark, simultaneously catchy and psychological, the sound is cinematic and complex, drawing on diverse sources that include folklore, mythology, horror films, and autobiography. The albums are conceptual and thematic; her full-length 2012 release “Night of the Psychopomp” was an otherworldly exploration that drew upon the myth of the spirit guide and a personal journey to understand the grief process.

Ruby Rae's latest record was inspired during her residency at the Akumal International Art Residency in Mexico (2015). The songs create a journey inspired by personal transformation, Mayan legends, tropical + desert landscapes, hiraeth and nostalgia, and film noir. Recorded at Mavericks studio in NYC by Bob Mallory, produced by Matthew Agoglia, and mastered by Alex DeTurk, the production of the album is radiant and paired with a brilliant illustration by talented artist Katherine Hardy. "The Uncanny" was released on July 8th, 2016, and is available via CD Baby, Apple Music, Tidal, Spotify, Bandcamp and on vinyl through the Shop.

Ruby Rae is currently finishing a record "True Crime" in collaboration with Producer Lawson White to be released in 2022.
